Thesis on Not On My WaveLength: Risk Perception & The Sebastopol Wi-Fi Debate. My thesis examined the 2007–2008 public controversy in Sebastopol, CA, over the installation of a free municipal Wi-Fi network. Despite scientific consensus on Wi-Fi safety, local activists convinced the city council to rescind its contract, citing health risks such as electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS). Through interviews, petitions, and media analysis, I explored how personal experience and cultural values shaped community perceptions of risk. Drawing on Cultural Theory of Risk and cultural cognition, I argued that scientific evidence alone was insufficient to resolve the conflict — instead, cultural frames, trust in institutions, and social amplification of risk determined the outcome.
